If you really want to see everything, I suggest you move there for a while :)
I tried my best to see as much as I could in 6 days.
Good to know and a cheaper and faster way to visit the city: The New York City Pass
You can buy this pass for several durations. I bought myself one for 5 days and I saved a lot of money. If I were to pay the full entrance at each attraction, I would have spent a lot of money!
You can order it online and pick it up in different gift shops around the city.
I had a lot of fun using it!
I climbed on top of the Empire State building and took the Sky Ride while up there; I went on Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center), to Madame Tussauds, I went through the recruitment process for becoming one of the Avenger's superhero's (Discovery @Times Square), took the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and visited the Metropolitan museum.
With the NY city pass you don't even have to wait in line, you can use the priority lane!
My favorite attraction was by far the Brooklyn Bridge! The sun helped it to achieve this status tough :)
It was so lovely to be able to walk quietly over the bridge, above the cars, so they don't bother you, and enjoy the view. The prettiest view was the Brooklyn-side view, just under the bridge.
For a moment, you can escape the busy citylife.
An anecdote I want to share with you: while walking to the Brooklyn Bridge, I heard loud music coming from across the street. My curiosity won and it got me in the middle of a street dance performance. They even let me be part of the show at the end! Luckily, I didn't have to streetdance, otherwise it would have become a comedy show :)
In New York you can literally bump into people on the corner of a street. It was snowing heavily and I was taking pictures of a wall sign on 5th Avenue (I found it funny that there were so many plastic surgeons in 1 street). I wasn't looking and I bumped into 2 guys, who were having a snowball fight and thus weren't looking either. We said sorry and went for a coffee :)
This would never happen at home!
If you are fond of walking, I would suggest you don't miss out on the following attractions or neighborhoods: the High Line Park, Chelsea - Soho - Nolita - Greenwich Village (for hipster foodielovers!) - East Village. I prefer downtown Manhattan over uptown, but it depends what you're looking for...
It would be an idea to walk on Broadway from South to North. You'll pass Union Square and Madison Square Park and see the Flatiron building, Times Square and walk by the South-West corner of Central Park.
So much to see, so little time... I'll have to come back one day. Remind me to go when it's warmer, like in summer.
